Architecture of the Castle
Castel del Monte has an octagonal plan. The number eight, a symbol of perfection, inspires the entire structure, both on the exterior and interior: there are eight towers, also octagonal in shape, eight sides of the inner courtyard, and eight halls on the ground floor and upper floor. The octagon symbolizes imperial power for its resemblance to the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. Three towers connect the two floors with spiral staircases, while five enclose suspended cisterns for collecting rainwater, used to supply the baths. It is likely that a suspended balcony overlooking the courtyard connected the rooms on the first floor. Frederick II spared no expense to make his castle luxurious. The three-dimensional model allows you to explore the architecture of Castel del Monte and experience its greatness and complexity firsthand.
