Monsters and medieval bestiaries

A medieval man's life was populated by animals, both real and fantastical. From the religious vision of the world originated the Bestiaries: not mere manuals of natural history, but texts that, through the figurative and allegorical description of various animal species, warn the faithful against assuming behaviors contrary to faith and morality. And so, from the illuminated pages of books, animals transfer onto portals, capitals, mosaics, frescoes, keystones, and tapestries of churches and buildings. From unicorns to dragons, from monkeys to lions, animals are omnipresent. At Castel del Monte, four dragons bite each other in one of the keystones on the first floor. They are carved in limestone and represent the passage of time. They have large eyes, feathered wings, clawed feet, and knotted tails. The 3D model allows you to better discover their features.
