Frederick II: life in history

Frederick II was born in Jesi, in the Marca Anconetana, on December 26th 1194, one day after the coronation of his father, Henry VI of Hohenstaufen, as king of Sicily. His mother, Constance, who was forty years old at the time, came from Germany at the same time as her husband, but following the safer Adriatic route, and decided to stop in Jesi for the birth. In the person of the young Frederick the Swabian and Norman families of Altavilla converged. His grandparents were, on the paternal side, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and, on the maternal side, the first king of Sicily, Roger II.
Having lost his parents, at the age of four Federico was placed - at his mother's request - under the tutelage of Pope Innocent III, who assumed the regency of the Kingdom. In the cosmopolitan environment of Palermo, the child received an education rich in those cultural stimuli and interests that characterize the environments connected with the court.
In 1208, upon reaching adulthood, Frederick became king of Sicily and married Constance of Aragon, who died in 1222. From their union, Henry was born, the future king of the Romans. On 22 November 1220, Pope Honorius III anointed Frederick emperor, who had already promised to undertake a crusade in 1215 in Aachen, on the occasion of his coronation as king of the Romans (i.e. of Germany). In 1225, in Brindisi, Frederick married Isabella (or Iolanda) of Brienne, queen of Jerusalem, who died in childbirth three years later. From their union Corrado was born, future king of the Romans, Sicily and Jerusalem.
Delays in leaving for the crusade lead, in 1227, to the excommunication of Frederick II by Pope Gregory IX.
