Keystones

In architecture, a keystone doesn't just have a decorative function, but also - and above all - a structural one. With its wedge shape it fits perfectly in the center of the cross vault to evenly distribute its weight on the load bearing pillars.

Refined limestone keystones are well preserved in the rooms of Castel del Monte, with plant, animal and human representations: suggestive bearded faces peer at us from above, mythological animals seem to dance over our heads and flowers with large radial petals greet our entrance, in this room as in many others throughout the castle.

An iron ring was often fixed in the center of the keystone to support a candelabra and ensure lighting during the night.

During the day, light enters this room from the oculus on the wall facing the courtyard and from the single-lancet window on the opposite side. The room is connected to the adjacent octagonal tower, equipped with toilets.
