The restorations

Following the purchase of Castel del Monte by the Italian State in 1876, numerous restoration interventions took place - almost continuously - to ensure the conservation of the structure. Between 1877 and 1879 the first urgent interventions took place, managed by the Civil Engineers of Bari, which affected the terrace and part of the external curtain wall.

The current appearance of Castel del Monte is influenced by the work of architects, engineers, art historians and archaeologists who, over time, have taken turns in consolidating the structure, restoring the roofs and the access staircase external and curtain walls and in the adaptation of the landscape context.

The presence of a fireplace, unfortunately in a fragmented state, of toilets, which can be accessed from the nearby octagonal tower, and of good lighting, thanks to the mullioned windows, shows this room was well suited for resting in. There is no trace of the original keystone, a victim of the sackings during the long period of the abandonment the castle suffered.
